For Carol: The only One who Cares

I was about six or seven. I sat on the chilly creme and brown living room tile five inches away from our TV. It was Lifetime. The show was about two really good friends that both happened to be female. They went to high school together and did all sorts of stuff that friends do. Then at the end of the movie, there was some sort of controversy due to the fact that they wanted to go to prom together. I didn't comprehend this. Why not let them go to prom together?? I had heard of cousins going to prom together. (you know the jokes on Married With Children and stuff) Why couldn't, in my assumptions, "best friends," attend high school Prom together. The word gay was thrown in there a couple times and I decided that I simply did not understand. When you don't understand something, you ask. hmm. All the while I watched this incredibly educational show, my Mom was taking a nap. I creep in her room and tap her; I rest my head on my arms, and pose the question: "Hey Mom, Am I gay?" She spanked me and cancelled our cable subscription.

i would have loved for you to ask me that question
i don't know what i would have said
i would have freaked out first

do you think that would have confused you?

if dezma asks you that later on in life
would you spank her?

i would explain to her the meaning, and let her take it from there. Dezma will never be spanked for asking a question! A lesson from my childhood...
